Meterware is the German general term for a fabric sold by the meter. This design concept is inspired by the look and feel of vintage linen fabrics which you often find on flea markets here.
But rather than just striping the knitted piece in one direction, this design is worked in rounds, around a single stripe which forms the centrepiece. Increases are worked at each of the four corners, very similar to knitting a raglan section on a sweater.
This concept can be worked in any yarn weight and can be used for scarves, cushions and even blankets. It’s an invitation to play with colours and fibres!

Dimensions
The finished wrap measures about 220 cm x 40 cm / 86.6 x 15.7“ after washing and blocking.
Yarn
Any fingering weight yarn (non-superwash, ca. 400 m / 100 g)
MC: 875 m / 957 yds
CC1: 320 m / 350 yds
CC2: 85 m / 93 yds
Needles
2 sets of circular needles, about 3,25 mm / US 3,
120 cm / 47“ long.
Gauge
20 sts x 44 rows = 10 cm / 4“ in pattern on 3,25 mm / US 3 needles after washing and blocking (stretch thoroughly).
Don’t knit too loose, the stitches will streetch a lot though the weight of the knitted fabric – my original swatch was 24 sts x 30 rows.
Description
This fresh take on a classic striped scarf reveals its unique construction on second glance. It‘s worked in the round from the centre outwards, creating striped rectangles as the pattern unfolds.
Techniques
The wrap is primarily worked using knit and purl stitches. Techniques include a provisional cast-on, raglan increases, and an I-cord bind-off.
